Bird proofing and pest bird management in Melbourne

Birds nesting beneath solar panels, gathering above factory workspaces or damaging gardens and sporting grounds can create very different problems.

Alpha Pest & Game Services develops site-specific programs for introduced pest birds around homes, businesses, warehouses, food production facilities, orchards, council assets and sporting grounds. Our services include netting, spikes, electric deterrent wiring, trapping, controlled shooting, exclusion mesh and solar panel bird proofing.

We generally work within approximately 100 km of Melbourne CBD, with projects elsewhere in Victoria available on request. We assess the bird species, site conditions, surrounding properties, animal welfare requirements and your budget before recommending an approach.

We focus on introduced pest bird issues. We do not provide bird nest removal or bird droppings clean-up.

Problems we address

When birds affect your property

Bird activity can lead to noise, access problems, damage and hygiene concerns. The appropriate response depends on the species and location.

Solar panels and roof cavities

Birds may seek shelter beneath solar panels or around roof gaps. Nesting materials can obstruct drainage or create other property concerns. We offer exclusion measures to restrict access.

Factories and warehouses

Birds on beams, rafters and loading areas can leave droppings where goods are stored or handled. We assess access routes and suitable management methods.

Gardens, orchards and sporting grounds

Some introduced birds damage fruit and vegetables, disturb garden beds or affect playing surfaces. The site and species determine the management options.

Species

Introduced pest birds we manage

Daryn has identified these species among those the business regularly encounters. Identification and any applicable protections or restrictions are assessed before control work.

Common mynas

Can seek shelter around roof cavities and building openings and may be persistent when access points are blocked.

Feral pigeons

Often gather on beams, roofs and ledges. Droppings can create hygiene concerns and damage surfaces.

House sparrows

May access small gaps in roofs and buildings and establish nesting sites.

Common starlings

Can gather in groups, create noise and affect roofs, buildings and some crops.

Spotted doves

May roost around buildings and outdoor structures, creating nuisance activity.

Common blackbirds

Can disturb garden mulch and damage fruit or vegetable gardens.

Management methods

Bird deterrents, exclusion and removal options

No single technique suits every roof, commercial building or open area. We recommend measures based on the activity, access, welfare considerations and site requirements.

Bird netting

Netting can restrict access to areas such as loading bays, overhead structures and other spaces where birds gather. The design depends on the building, access requirements and target species.

Bird spikes

Spikes can discourage birds from settling on suitable ledges and other narrow surfaces. They are selected and installed according to the location and bird activity.

Electric bird deterrent wiring

Electric deterrent systems may be suitable for selected ledges and architectural features. The proposed installation and site safety requirements are assessed first.

Trapping programs

Trapping may be used for suitable introduced pest bird species. Programs require planning, monitoring and humane handling in accordance with applicable requirements.

Targeted shooting

On suitable sites, controlled shooting may be considered where permitted and safe. This is assessed carefully around buildings, people and neighbouring properties.

Mechanical exclusion mesh

Mesh systems can block access to vulnerable gaps and structures, helping prevent birds from returning to a particular entry point.

Solar panel bird proofing

Purpose-designed mesh can restrict access beneath solar panels. The condition of the roof and array, safe access and the bird species inform the proposed work.

Alpha Pest & Game Services does not offer nest removal or droppings clean-up. Any proposed control activity is subject to species identification, applicable rules, permissions and site safety requirements.

Actual work

Bird management projects around Melbourne

These examples were supplied by Daryn Cassidy and illustrate different problems and approaches. Project photographs can be added once supplied and approved.

Heathmont · Two-storey home

Solar panel bird proofing

Birds were nesting beneath solar panels on a two-storey house.

Alpha Pest & Game Services installed bird proofing around the solar panels to prevent access to the space beneath them.

Daryn reports the birds left after access was blocked.

Altona · Factory

Bird management in a courier pick-and-pack area

Birds were landing on overhead beams, with droppings presenting a hygiene risk in the work area.

The team secured an entrance to restrict further access, then undertook a controlled shooting program to remove remaining birds from the factory space.

Access was restricted and the remaining birds were targeted for removal.

Yarra Valley · Sporting field

Managing bird damage to sporting grounds

Birds were stripping ground turf and damaging timber in areas of a sporting field.

The team carried out several programs addressing bird activity in the affected areas and assisted the club with deterrence.

Management programs were carried out across the problem areas.

Prevention

Reducing the chance of birds returning

Blocking one nesting or roosting area does not necessarily stop birds looking for another opening or ledge nearby. Correctly installed exclusion measures and periodic inspections help protect treated areas.

We can discuss maintaining mesh, netting and spikes, checking for storm damage and monitoring new access points. For complex sites, a staged program may be more appropriate than a single visit.

Where a project involves broader property protection, see our wildlife management services and monitoring and data collection.

Common questions

Bird control FAQs

Which birds do you manage?

We focus on introduced pest birds such as common mynas, feral pigeons, house sparrows, common starlings, spotted doves and common blackbirds. Species identification and applicable requirements are checked before work proceeds.

Do you provide bird control throughout Melbourne?

We generally service properties within about 100 km of Melbourne CBD and can travel elsewhere in Victoria at a client's request.

Can you stop birds nesting beneath solar panels?

We offer solar panel bird proofing using exclusion mesh to help prevent access beneath panels. We assess the array and roof access before quoting.

How long does bird proofing take?

The time varies by site. Daryn has indicated that some standard residential mesh or spike installations may take around three to six hours, while larger or complex sites can take longer. We confirm the expected timeframe after assessment.

How long can a trapping program take?

Daryn has indicated that some trapping programs may run for approximately seven to fourteen days, depending on activity and site conditions. Monitoring and animal welfare requirements influence the program.

Can birds return after treatment?

Birds may look for another accessible ledge, roof gap or sheltered area. Well-maintained barriers can restrict access to the treated location, but a property-wide guarantee against future bird activity is not possible.

Are bird spikes and netting safe around children and pets?

Physical deterrents do not rely on chemical treatment, but installation and access still require site-specific safety precautions. Tell us about children, pets and occupied areas during the assessment.

What access do you need?

We may need clear access around the building and safe access to rooflines, ledges, solar panels or high structures. Ladders, scaffolding or elevated work platforms may be required.

What maintenance is required?

Mesh, spikes and other exclusion measures should be inspected periodically for movement, damage or new gaps, particularly after storms or building works.

Do you remove nests or clean up bird droppings?

No. Alpha Pest & Game Services does not provide bird nest removal or bird droppings clean-up. If either is required, arrange it separately with an appropriately qualified provider.

Do you treat bird mites?

[CLIENT TO CONFIRM: whether bird mite treatments are offered. This service has not been confirmed and is not advertised on this page.]

How much does bird control cost?

Pricing depends on the species, affected area, building height, safe access, equipment, the chosen method and any ongoing visits. Contact us with photographs and site details for an assessment and quote.

Is there an inspection fee or minimum charge?

[CLIENT TO CONFIRM: actual inspection fees, minimum charges and whether any inspection fee is deducted from an accepted quote.]

Do you provide a warranty?

[CLIENT TO CONFIRM: any applicable workmanship or product warranty, its duration and exclusions.]

What information should I send?

Please send your location, the type of property, photographs of the birds and the affected area from close up and further away, and details of any access restrictions.

Professional background

Experience and responsible bird management

Alpha Pest & Game Services holds $20 million public liability insurance and is a member of Vertebrate Pest Managers Australia (VPMA). Daryn reports that the business keeps in contact with wildlife organisations to stay informed about species and that a team member has experience rescuing raptors and other predatory birds.

The business concentrates on introduced pest birds. We assess species identification, relevant rules, animal welfare and any permissions before choosing a management method. We do not claim to manage protected native birds under a general feral-bird service.
